GROUP RHODA is the one woman, new age, synth-pop group from San Francisco, a la Space Lady. GROUP RHODA recently completed a tour with the Soft Moon (those of the best record artwork for some time) and, after selected dates with Peaking Lights last year, finally makes it over to Europe for a headline tour in support of her debut LP 'Out Of Time, Out Of Touch' on NIGHT SCHOOL records. Her next LP is to be released later this year via NOT NOT FUN.

SIMON JOYNER & THE GHOSTS are a living, breathing entity; a full six piece band, growing out of Joyner's double-LP record 'Ghosts' released last Summer on his own Sing, Eunuchs! label. Simon Joyner should require no introduction, but despite plaudits from everyone from John Peel to Conor Oberst, who cites Joyner as a primary influence, he remains a cult figure. His sterling reputation is mostly built on thirteen albums of lyrically astute, musically dense, uncompromising songs. As a wordsmith he is peerless, often compared to both Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, while his singing voice alternately conjures an emotionally turbulent Neil Young (think "Speakin' Out") and Gordon Gano circa "Country Death Song." But Joyner's songs also bear the influence of more modern mavericks, revealing a sharp appreciation for the fringes of the American and UK underground. It's not for nothing he cites the Dead C's raucous 'Harsh 70's Reality' as one of the handful of double albums that inspired 'Ghosts'. For lovers of lyrics, that fast-perishing breed, 'Ghosts' is Christmas morning. Listening to it, you may frequently find yourself covering your mouth in disbelief, exclaiming "Oh shit!" like someone just dropped a particularly scathing hip-hop metaphor. The music matches the intensity of the words. Joyner's band is an intuitive organism never content to merely 'back up' the singer. Each member of the group suffuses the environments of these songs with unusual color without ever overplaying or subordinating. With, 'Ghosts', Simon Joyner couldn't have made a more extreme example of an album that so handsomely rewards total immersion and a live show incorporating guitars, viola, pedal steel, bass and drums spells out something equally special.

BRILLIANT COLORS are a four-piece from San Francisco, inspired by post-punk fervor, the spiky pop of C86 and early Flying Nun / Creation missives. Their 2009 album, 'Introducing', is one of the finest debuts in recent memory, and they followed it with 7"s on Slumberland and Make a Mess and a European tour with La La Vasquez that led to the release of another great single on Germs of Youth. Most recently, they teamed up with Belfast's brilliant Girls Names to release a split 7". All of these singles were recorded with Oakland garage phenom Ty Segall, who spiked the ladies' punk-pop swirl with his own special grit. Their most recent album 'Again And Again', came out last Summer on Slumberland, displaying song-writing as infectious as ever, only now the tunes are now more carefully arranged pushing the band to something as elemental as pop gets. The mood is confessional and late-night dreamy; Jess' unadorned vocals and eloquent lyrics are personal, direct and atmospherically deployed, mixed in with the songs like another instrument. They can be heard to great effect on tougher songs like "Back To The Tricks" and "Painting Truths," tempering those tunes' punchy dynamics with their melodic sensibility. Add in classic-sounding stormers like "Cult Face" and "How Much Younger" and you have all the makings of another great Brilliant Colors album, one that shows how finely they've honed their own unique brand punk-flecked crash-pop.

THE PROPER ORNAMENTS make a thrillingly taut and melodic pop indebted both to the sun balm'd West Coast and the driving, terse rhythms of the British Invasion and C86 pop, centered around the close partnership of frontmen Max Claps and James Hoare (also of Veronica Falls). In 2010 were joined by bassist Michael Lovett and Let's Wrestle frontman Wesley Patrick Gonzalez, releasing a 7" on San Francisco label Make A Mess Records. 2011 saw them release a self-titled EP on No Pain In Pop, proving the band as purveyors of abrupt, perfect pop, jet propelled by super compressed drum production and the pair's DNA tight vocal interplay.

DAVID KENNETH NANCE recently stepped out of his burned out basement in Omaha, Nebraska and steeped himself in the city of angels, provoking collective grief and inciting small riots in the hearts of the house show universe here. Rocker and singer-songwriter from that catchy, shambolic mess called The Prairies, he also plays lead guitar and shouts in Simon Joyner's band, the Ghosts. His forthcoming, vinyl debut on Grapefruit Records, "Actor's Diary," was recorded late at night alone in Joyner's warehouse studio, Casa de los Fantasmas, over a two month period leading up to his west coast pilgrimage, this is anguish and expectation and meditations on what was, is, and might be in the artist's life. Channeling Jim Shepard, heroin-era Stones and New Zealand's notorious Jefferies brothers through broken and poorly repaired gear, Nance rock is indeed the new pasture!

U.S. GIRLS is the nomme de guerre of one Meghan Remy. She has releases on Siltbreeze, Kraak, Atelier Cisceaux, Medusa Editions, Sibling Sex, Electric Voice, Not Not Fun, Hardscrabble Amateurs, Fast Weapons, Cherry Burger, Palmist, Chocolate Monk, Clan Destine and her own Calico Corp label. Her most recent LP 'GEM' was released on Fat Cat records and is the first of her albums to be recorded with a full band, who'll be joining her on this tour. She also contributed collage and a song to our recent collaboration with MUSEUMS PRESS- MUSEUMS IV .

We've been trying to set up a show for U.S GIRLS for about 5 years now, a time that has seen the U.S.GIRLS sound change considerably and also a time that has seen the rest of the world try and fail to catch up with her music which is, at once, genuinely experimental and unabashedly 'pop'; the sound of the future and yet stacked in nostalgia; academic and emotional; packed with reminiscences and but singular in it's vision, challenging and unshakeable.

Comfortable On A Tightrope present the debut vinyl release from Apostille - aka Night School's Michael Kasparis' fractured pop utterances. Kaleidoscopic instrumentation and cracked synths frame two bona fide degraded pop songs centred around a lurking sense of misanthropy, albeit a misanthropy tempered with ecstatic tendencies. 'Wrong' is the mid paced groover for self-erasing western consciousness, possessing a chorus hook so insidious and fun it diverts from the content. 'The Road To War' takes a sisters of mercy in hypnagogia approach to anthems and produces a sing-a-long both unintelligible and seductively drenched in fervour and sweat.

It is with great pleasure we announce the return to Manchester of the mighty CHAIN & THE GANG.

Remember when Rock and Roll was going to at lest try to change the world? They do! And one night and one town at a time they've been doing exactly that. Now three albums in, the most recent 'IN COOL BLOOD' is out now on 'K', CHAIN (aka Ian F Svenonius of the Make-Up, Nation of Ulysses, Weird War, Felt Letters and etc) has a new GANG---this time comprised of M'Ladys Records mavens Brett Lyman (Bad Thoughts, Saturday Looks Good To Me) and Fiona Campbell (Coasting, Vivian Girls), Katie Alice Greer (last heard, in our house at least on 'Desire' by Duck Duck Grey Duck aka MR001-the first ever release on Mississippi Records) and Martha Fabi Reyna (of Reynosa, Modern Marriage and She Shreds Magazine) and tomorrow for one night only they perform live in Manchester at Kraak, Stevenson Square.

It's been a while since TRASH KIT last came to play in Manchester, though you may have had the privilege of seeing some of their other bands HALO HALO, SACRED PAWS, GOLDEN GRRRLS, ELECTRELANE in the past couple of years. Anyone present at the Trash Kit /Grass Widow show in 2010, or those in possession of their LP on Upset The Rhythm or split 7" with WOOLF on Milk, will need no reminder of how necessary it is to see TRASH KIT live. It is a great pleasure to finally welcome from Austin via Brookyln DEEP TIME for their Manchester debut.

You may remember them as Yellow Fever (YellowFever) under which name they released a string of perfect singles and EP's on Hugpatch, M'ladys, Monofonus Press or their LP on Wild World (subsequently re-issued by M'lady's). You may even recall their contribution to our very-own MUSEUMS compilation.

Now called DEEP TIME, and with a new album out now on HARDLY ART they are bringing their idiosyncratic diy-pop to Europe for the first time and we couldn't be more excited.

Don't take our word for it, check the videos below, including one for 'clouds' directed by Hannah Lew (co-star of our current Birthday Tape Virgo with the nights other band, SACRED PAWS)

DEEP TIME hesitated to invade your consciousness for so long. You were getting irritated.
"They're late!" you moaned as you paced around the room, stamping out cigarette butts. "Who's late?" your friends would ask, but you couldn't answer ‘cos you didn't quite know … you just knew DEEP TIME had to be out there, somewhere.
And they were. Like a doomsday cult lurking at the edge of the desert, they were biding their time, patiently poised to pounce. One day they would run free in their dune buggies, dispensing truth to the wretched, starving masses.
But they had to wait … for the right time! They had surveyed the scene for some years and, as occurs before each apocalypse, saw the Earth was rife with false prophets. DEEP TIME let them do their thing – they are part of the process, after all – and coolly watched them espouse their various dogmas, panaceas, crazes, and snake oils.
Each of these crazes precipitated mass hysteria, inspiring the mob to run this or that-a-way, drooling, sobbing, flailing about and/or groaning. Those so affected would eventually collapse on the ground, unconscious until awakened by a new plastic potentate with yet another craze, trend or fad. The crowd would dutifully chase, drool, collapse all over again.

While DEEP TIME watched all this transpire, they too could have joined the fray, jumped aboard the ... When the time was right. When the dust had cleared and the ruins had settled into the precisely correct rubble proscenium on which to perform.
When would that time be? Luckily for you dear reviewer/ enthusiast or whoever you may be, IT IS RIGHT NOW.
DEEP TIME (née YELLOW FEVER) are from Austin TX, a bewitching pop duo, comprised of Jennifer Moore on Organ, electric guitar and vocal microphone, and Adam Jones on drums – who are as infectious and delightful as this time demands.
Jennifer Moore, once the torchbearer for girl-group legends THE CARROTS is something altogether unusual in the modern age; a singer with those endangered qualities: personality, style, and an arresting delivery. Adam Jones is the jazzy 'batterista,' as musical and dynamic a drummer as you will see on the scene today. Once upon a time, creatures such as these roamed the earth in the dozens; now they are as rare as the barely glimpsed yeti.
BUT! It's not just their personality that recommends them. It's the tunes, mate. Just listen to the new-wave polka-soul-serenading madness of "Gold Rush," the toe-tapping Italo-mutation of "Sgt Sierra," the easy-listening doom-incantation of "Gilligan" … every song on the record is a bon-a-fide catastrophe for the forces of predictability and boredom.
DEEP TIME are that kind of rare phenomenon that is easy to miss in the modern rock carnival because they don't wear kabuki make-up or pour PBR on their head. Their bandwagon isn't a monster truck or a garish tour bus with a broken toilet, so you might not see it parked outside of the club. Still, jump on when it drives by. It's a sweet ride.

Laetitia Glenton is an artist based in Manchester, UK, where as one half of Comfortable on a Tightrope, she produces independent concerts, DJs, releases tapes and records. Her visual arts practice is inseparable from her activity in the city’s DIY scene, as her works on paper reflect the languages and concerns of this community. Nostalgia-rich images from discarded advertisements and home photography are damaged and reprocessed in her work, questioning these legacies. Coded messages are hidden in dead languages and punctuation, mirroring the means by which underground scenes communicate. Her work has appeared in exhibitions in the UK, and in numerous small press books and records.

At the beginning of the MMXIIth Year of our Lord we started a new collaborative with our sweet-hearted friends GIANT HELL.
We called it BIRTHDAY TAPES, as it was to be in concert with the cosmos and zodiac-affiliated and but also because we wanted each object to feel like a gift, wrapped as they are specially commissioned ark work.
Essentially a 'singles' club with one split release per zodiacal month.
So in MMXII there will be contributions from 24 different bands /recording artists and 12 visual artists/ image makers/ illustrators.

It's almost three whole years since Ramona Gonzales' NITE JEWEL last played in Manchester. If you were there then or you've had the pleasure of listening to any of her pitch-perfect and perfectly pitched pop records on BIG LOVE, Italians Do It Better, No Pain In Pop, Gloriette, 1984 (stones throw), human ear, Mexican Summer or any of her self released cdrs. Her newest album 'One Second Of Love' arrived at the start of the year via Secretly Canadian and displays, as on all of the other releases, her knack for constucting a sophisticated pop music that is refined, elegant and learned and but not so knowing that it ever stops being fun.We are so glad to welcome NITE JEWEL back to Manchester.

Never shy to collaborate, having worked in the past with Butchy Fuego, Linda Perhacs, Ariel Pink, Julia Holter and Cole MGN among others, most recently she's been working with NICHOLAS KRGOVICH (see Frank Ocean cover above) who joins her on this tour, playing in the NITE JEWEL band and also as main support. Perhaps best known for his wrk in NO KIDS, P:ANO and collaborations with MOUNT EERIE, KRGOVICH has recently started to record and perform under his given name and has a string of releases including a 7" on P W Elverum and Sun (video below) and a new covers LP called 'REAL LIFE'.

Opening proceedings is ALDOUS RH, one of the best dancers in town. A contribution to BIRTHDAY TAPES is forthcoming as are, probably, a string of classic albums to be given away online and hopefully released on traditional formats too.
