This Saturday February 4th sees the Upset The Rhythm 'KINGDOM' Tour make it's Manchester stop at Kraak Gallery, Stevenson Square. It's almost 2 years since WAY THROUGH were last in Manchester---they played their second ever gig at SFTOC 2010. This tour also coincides with the release of a new album 'Enclosure' on Comfortable On A Tightrope as well as new records by all three bands on Upset The Rhythm.

Over the last eight years Upset The Rhythm have inexhaustibly sought out the best underground sounds from all over the world. With fifty releases under their belt and their inspired series of YES WAY festivals they continually focus the spotlight on the UK’s own idiosyncratic DIY music. February 2012 sees the label hit the road with three incredibly inventive bands from their native soil to bring their pastoral punk, junked rhythms and tribal synth dance parties to the near and far of the United Kingdom. Upset The Rhythm’s Kingdom Tour sees GENTLE FRIENDLY, WAY THROUGH and PEEPHOLES team up to present a revolving lineup that resonates deep within landscape, drawing on forgotten pasts and remembered futures in equal measure.

Here’s a more in depth look at all the UTR artists featured on the tour…

GENTLE FRIENDLY are a duo from London, comprised of David Morris and Richard Manber, who have a penchant for circular melodies, tidal fuzz and rapid junked rhythms. With an austere setup of Casio keyboard, vocals and drums (sometimes electronic) the band push against the pop boundary, trapping their songs on record like a continuous sun-warped field recording. 2009 saw Gentle Friendly release their debut album 'Ride Slow' to critical acclaim, with Pitchfork even citing Clipse and Lil Wayne as influences on the band. Since then Gentle Friendly have remodeled and rebuilt their sound into a stronger beast at their home studio called Deep House. Bringing us up to date, new EP 'Rrrrrrr' is the first fruit to fall from the tree, with its seven tracks washing the band's insistent prism punk alongside more tender, filmic textures.

WAY THROUGH are a pastoral punk duo originally from Shropshire, now residing in London. Informed by the field as much as the flyover, Way Through write songs which phase in and out with guitar, tapes, damaged drums and vocals. Using wrong-footed repetition, rapid interplay and free-looping happenstance the band create a ragged yet intuitive tapestry of sound. Their songs walk the streets of market towns, wait forever at bus stops and lose themselves in edgelands. Way Through find great resonance with the spirit of place and try and channel its feeling into their music, joining the dots between lost places and deteriorating histories. Their debut album 'Arrow Shower' is out now on Upset The Rhythm, alongside the band's new deep map project of London's East End.

PEEPHOLES are Katia Barrett (drums, vocals) and Nick Carlisle (keyboards). The Brighton / London duo formed in 2006 after bonding over a Chinese violin and the quietest of music. Pretty soon they turned the volume up and hit on their winning strategy of soaring, stammering synth lines, tribalised drumming and low-slung vocals. Walking a tightrope between underground punk and dance music, Peepholes write cloaked anthems as likely to open celestial gates with keys of repetition as to soundtrack a slow motion fairground accident. Their sound is otherworldly, aching with wild beats, echoing with cavernous atmospheres. Upset The Rhythm have released a split 12” and a mini-album entitled ‘Caligula’ most recently.

THE BABIES are Cassie Ramone, Kevin Morby and Justin Sullivan from Brooklyn, New York City. They have an album on Dennis Callaci’s legendary Shrimper label and 7”s on Teenage Teardrops, Make-a-Mess, Wild World and LebensStrasse Records and a couple of tapes including ‘Live At The Smell’ on Kill/Hurt. That they deal in golden, shimmering, perfect pop songs will come as no surprise to fans of their other bands Woods and Vivian Girls.

SEX HANDS are, variously, from North Wales and Runcorn. They are probably the only and definitely the best band ever to take the popular television show Friends as the jump-off for their songs. They have a record forthcoming on Icecapades.

J COLLIN is one of our favourite guitar players in the world, his deep and spiritual nocturnes threaten perfection and are posessed of a purity akin to that of Sonny Sharrock, Philip Cohran, Loren Connors et al. are Nick Mitchell and Kate Armitage, veterans of Hotpants Romance, Beach Fuzz, EYE HAI, A WAKE etc. Since releasing their debut self-titled album they’ve toured Europe twice and return just in time to play our birthday which one of them shares.

WAITERS chiming, abstract and emotive guitars and rudimentary drums can be heard on a cassette ‘Haters’, a split 7” with Former Bullies, and a couple of cd’s on Bijin Record, the Tokyo-based label ran by Nisennenmondai with whom they share their most-recent and long-awaited record, the first copies of which will be available at this show.

which takes place on Monday 18th July 2011 at Bar Centro, Tib Street, Manchester. FELIX MULLER, Rob Walmart and Cole Moldy all reside in Portland, Oregon - home of the record labels that combine to give a name to this tour: 'H as In' (ran by Felix) and 'Marriage' (the label set up by a 15-year-old Adrian Orange and the first label to release music by THANKSGIVING, Y▲CHT, LUCKY DRAGONS, tUnE-YaRdS, Rob Walmart and etc/ one of our own personal inspirations) and will each perform a set of their own as well as forming a band for Felix Muller- in fact don't be too surprised if they all play with each other.
Felix's songs occupy a space in our minds and hearts right next to THANKSGIVING/ Little Wings/ Microphones/ MT Eerie which is a special place indeed and we are very excited to welcome him for his first Manchester performance. If you can remember the first Manchester performance of any of those other guys you'll know this is going to be special.

David Bailey has an exhibition 'Flesh & Bone' at Common, a shop 'GOOD GRIEF!' at the Soup Kitchen, a new collaborative painting with Bryony Jackson in the 'Bright Tomorrow' Exhibition at the Art of Tea in Didsbury (where a Good Grief! concession is open for the summer months/duration of the exhibition) and has recently started a food blog.

We are delighted to invite you to celebrate and witness the Manchester debuts of two of our favourite bands from the South American branch of the international pop underground!

It's almost impossible to convey our excitement. This is a once-in-a-lifetime type of opportunity to see two amazing bands from the other side of the world for less than the price of a cocktail.

Las Robertas are from Costa Rica. Their album 'Cry Out Loud' was given away for free before being re-mixed by Jon Greene (engineer for Dum Dum Girls, Crocodiles ) and re-mastered by Pete Lyman (engineer for No Age, Mika Miko, Moondog etc. etc.) ready for release on Art Fag (Dunes, Heavy Hawaii, Bleached, best coast). Since then they've shared stages with their heroes (Black Tambourine, Edwyn Collins) and their peers (the beets, german measles, davila 666, Dum Dum Girls, Japandroids, Aias) all over America and now finally in Europe where they played at Primaverasound. Thanks to Dance Magic Dance they extended their trip to include this, their first visit to the UK. Expect a 21st century take on Black Tambourine and the Runaways. Dee Dee Dum Dum's classification of her own band's sound as 'Blissed-Out Buzzsaw' could quite easily have been coined specifically for Las Robertas.

KELLIES are from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their third album is about to be released in the UK by the legendary FIRE records and sees them expand on the feverish Rock & Roll of their earlier records with a kaleidoscopic and encyclopedic blend of garage, cumbia, dub and post-punk which, despite it's uniqueness (or maybe because of it) evokes bands as various and diverse as the co-ordinated stage outfits they've made their trademark: ESG, the Raincoats, the Slits, Nisennenmondai, the Ramones, Devo, Weave, the Flatbackers and etc. Whether singing in Spanish, English, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Catalan or French, dressed as aerobics instructors or tubes of toothpaste KELLIES live show is guaranteed to be seriously fun and completely unforgettable.

Okay, this is probably the most exciting weekend of the year so far!
Sunday sees the return of SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER CITY , as part of which we've invited 7 of our favourite bands to come and play at The King's Arms. The Sounds From The Other City poster you see at the top of the page was designed by Dave Bailey and Lucy Jones of Mount Pleasant who both have work on show in the amazing MUSEUMS PRESS group show at Islington Mill (1st floor) alongside all of the great people who's names you can see on the poster above which includes, you'll notice, Jess Higgins and Matthew Walkerdine the people responsible for MUSEUMS PRESS and also the SONNY SMITH 100 RECORDS poster displayed on this page.

SONNY SMITH 100 records and the MUSEUMS PRESS exhibition are both open for viewing for the duration of SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER CITY and are both essential viewing experiences. Both are also open for sneak previews tomorrow so after you've visited Salford Zine Fair check them out and be an expert ready for Sunday when everybody will be asking 'what's that?'

Sonny Smith 100 RECORDS in an exhibition which takes, as it's jump-off, 100 records Sonny and his friends made for a whole host of imaginary bands- the artist and song names of which were presented to a list of visual artists who were asked to realise the cover artwork of the imaginary songs while Sonny went about recording the songs. At the exhibition you can look at the record covers (made by some of our very favourite artists like Chris Johanson, Mingering Mike, Johanna Jackson, John 'OH SEES' Dwyer etc etc) and select a song from the Jukebox. Exciting right?

Sonny Smith's real band SONNY & THE SUNSETS will also be performing for us and you all at The Kings Arms as part of Sounds From The Other City alongside GIRLS NAMES, VERONICA FALLS, ANIMALS & MEN, GOLDEN GRRRLS, IRMA VEP and FEEL RIGHT

Also in May, it's our turn to nominate an orator for GENERAL INTEREST's lecture series at the SOUP KITCHEN on Spear Street, Manchester. General Interest is the radically-inclusive-community-art project of two of our favourite people in the history of the world and the brains, hands and eyes of the irrepressible MUSEUMS PRESS,Jess Higgins and Matthew Walkerdine. We are working on something pretty special for this and will tell you more as it transpires. If you haven't got it yet we highly recommend you purchase their latest opus 'MUSEUMS THREE' which is comprised of 2 x newspapers, 1 x risograph print, 1 x photographic print and 2 x booklets one of which consists of three interviews (with Simon Joyner, Ethan Swan and David Bailey) conducted by one of us (R L Perry) via gmail chat.

There's more too but we've spent too long on the computer for one day, there are books to read and records to listen to and friends to spend time with and food to cook and eat.

Quite simply, they just tried to figure out the best (and most sustainable) way to release records by bands and artists they truly care about. He also used to play in the Traditional Fools and Epsilons with Mikal Cronin. Somehow he found time to record/engineer the last brilliant colors record too. And he's only 23 years old.

recorded some of most beautiful, haunting and rebellious music ever between the years of 1919 and 1928. We first heard her sing on the excellent compilation 'I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore' which was Mississippi records 013 if you believe the cover or 014 if you prefer to put your trust in the etching on the record itself. Their were also songs on 'Black Mirror: reflections in Global Music' on Dust-to-Digital and the amazing compilation of Rebetika (rembetika) 'MORTIKA' also on Mississippi who are now releasing a whole LP entitled 'The Further The Flame, The Worse It Burns Me', containing all known recordings with a booklet containing all known photographs and translations of the controversial ( which were illegal in Greece). We could not recommend an album any more than this. Buy it now from Honest Jons or wherever you can find it.

stunning cassette with individual hand-painted cover for each one. manchester's waiters collect the tracks of their recent japanese only 7" and include 2 extra tracks of guitar-maxed out indie pop. theirs is a sound constantly in the red but completely without bravado or hokum, a take on the classic jamc / shop assistants shamble rambles but on a minimal-fi budget and maximal off-the-cuffness.

manchester's diy heroes comfortable on a tightrope push out irma vep's 'dylan's birthday tape'... who dylan is doesn't matter here, what matters is the heartbroken fuzzed out music that's smeared on the reel within. 12 songs of desert fuzz which bring to mind the dead man soundtrack as played by jandek on k records. there's mournfulness, a few nods to the classic drag city doomadeers (smog etc.) and there's whole panoramas of guitar abuse that bleed into the songs like bleach thrown onto a pretty tapestry. through-out the tape there's a great tension between genuine loveliness and an ever-present darkness looming in the corner, and the occasional voice that breaks through the mix is a bitter-sweet desperation that feels totally unique.

manchester's former bullies have tapped into a overflowing stream of summer melodies, scuzzed up playing and seeped the drips onto a battered dictaphone under their beds. gloriously diy, the group are part of the peerless comfortable on a tightrope collective and share a label with mazes - musically they're in the same dodgem ring, with echoes of a second hand 60s teenagedom filtered through post 90s frayed mind. it's super fun and hazey as a hot suburban street at midday but underneath all the reverb and fuzz there are some brilliant songs waiting to poke through.

They've already dropped a brand new Mazes single which, we reckon, is their best yet and the tape of the year so far- Colleen Green's 'milo goes to compton'- like if the Ramones Rock 'n' Roll High School was actually good and there was a band like Dum Dum Girls doing bong-hits with the Runaways while Molly Ringwald spins pink candyfloss for when they get hungry and they made a tape one afternoon.
Next on the agenda is a Former Bullies 7" (featuring songs from the sold-out 'Greetings' tape) and there's something from Brown Brogues incoming too. Here's a song from each of the bands on the roster (two from coleen green), they've been rad enough to share for free.

English-language bookstores which I thought was sort of fucked, but
then I was in one and they fully had some book about the
"Englishization" of the world, as in the spread of the English
language internationally. And I thought it was hilarious to have it
for sale in French-speaking Switzerland, a country that has 4 official
languages, none of which are English of course. But I guess that is
the point.

afterwards, and the doorman said "we don't want English" and when Dean

I remember during post 9/11 insanity when americans were dumping
french wine in the gutter and calling "french fries" "freedom fries"
hearing on the radio about how it was affecting the tourism industry
in France. Not because Americans were the most prevalent tourists, but
because they spent the most money.

ethanswan: Which is exactly what I love about Chris' painting. Sadly,
I don't think that any critical writing I've read about his work deals
with that. I'm not sure why, but the essays always seem to talk about
his art historical lineage, outsider painting and that kind of
silliness. I feel like it's such immediate work, but I guess if it
doesn't catch you it really doesn't catch you.

I really remember the first painting I ever saw of his, it was at a
group show in Brooklyn organized by Kathy Greyson years before she
worked at deitch. For sure Keegan McHargue was in the show, I think
maybe Christopher Garrett but I'm not sure? Anyway, most of the other
artists had a lot of work in it, but Chris Johanson just had one
painting, it was of a castle. Just flat grey paint with the castle,
all it's elaborate brickwork drawn in black, like a focused kid. I
thought it was so grim but also so funny, like it just laughed at the
notion of property or barricade. It made protection seem like some
juvenile fantasy

things at once in that way for sure. Things either have happy endings
or sad ones. I had years where I couldn't watch movies with sad
endings since I felt like I had enough opportunities to feel sad in my
life. But in the last few years I've been able to merge thoughts a
little bit better. I bet I could map it out with my return to the east
coast and to east coast life and perhaps also to the art/music I was
experiencing more readily here that was more open to balances

ethanswan: I didn't feel bad at the time but I was unreasonably
fragile for years. Then I moved back to Portland and went through it
all over again. The vegan grocery store had a benefit where they
showed that movie "Office Space" and I really freaked out because of
all the prison rape "jokes" and had a confrontation with the owners of
the store. What a jerk!

In terms of 'A Taste of Honey', I read that in a class called 'Modern
British Drama'. Basically I had a professor at college that I was
completely overwhelmed by, I thought she was the smartest ever, full
of the most amazing ideas and really capable of sharing them. I think
she studied at York University? She was definitely focused on British
lit.

Anyway, I took every class she took, starting with '19th century
British Novel' to 'Modern British Lit' to 'the Postcolonial Text" and
on.

The 'Modern British Drama' wasn't 100% exciting for me (although I
liked Harold Pinter) but I took it because she taught it.

When I started reading 'A Taste of Honey' I didn't know anything about
it, but freaked out when I read all the lines I'd already heard sung a
thousand times. It made me really happy and I guess a little bit
disappointed at the same time.

It didn't feel inescapably sad to me, I liked the idea of unexpected
endurance. Jo isn't exactly brave but she doesn't hide either. That's
how I felt most of my adolescence so it was helpful to recognize it
somewhere else.

frustrating and petulant and strangely entitled as Kerouac, or any of

fortunate I am to have parents that don't have expectations of my
success, they've both always said as long as I'm happy and safe they
don't really care. But one time, in my mid-20s, my mom threw in there
"and helping other people" which suddenly seems an extreme additional
pressure, as fearsome as the kids I knew whose parents wanted them to
be doctors. But I agree with her I think, even though in general I
think 'survival' is the easiest way to say it.

ethanswan: First, I want to say that I'm really flattered and honored
by the comparison. Thank you. Second, when I was much younger I sang
in a punk band and one review of our LP described the lyrics as
"erudite", which I had some trouble with. I ended up looking up the
word in the dictionary to figure out why it confused me

the dictionary definition of the word is something like "learned from
reading instead of experience" which blew my mind. Also I liked the
irony of having to look that particular word up.

Quarterly right now about this thing that happens here in New York,
Wierd, which was originally a party but then became a record label.
Now it's both, but more importantly a super sustaining and thoughtful
community. One of the major bands involved is a solo thing called
Martial Canterel, and I just had a really similar experience of not
being able to write about it in any context but architecturally

to understand what I'm drawn to and why. And one of the things I have
the most respect for is deliberateness, like Chris Johanson's
carefully measured bricks in the castle painting described above. And
I think that's why the vocabulary or reference of architecture is so

communities are important. I read an article on the plane about the
woman who races cars and is trying to transition from indy 500 racing
to NASCAR and how it's been difficult because they're so different. I
appreciated the author's efforts to unpack the distinction but
ultimately it felt ridiculous to me. In this case I was the someone
overhearing it on the bus, right?

me: I wanted to ask about your relationship with 'Death'. I recall a
previous correspondence where you said that you felt that the more
death you encountered, the less impact it seemed to have. And i
suppose i associate busyness with the looming or fear of death- like
without it, if we thought we'd live forever, we'd never get anything
done. And well you seem very busy. do you acknowledge the looming of
death as a motivator?

ethanswan: It's an interesting time to talk about this. We have this
series at the museum called "Propositions" that I think is one of the
best things that the museum does. The idea is for an artist (or
curator, or critical thinker) to present an idea in progress, a topic
or idea or hypothesis they're considering but haven't yet formulated.
The structure is for the artist to give a lecture on Friday night
about their topic. Then on Saturday an invited guest, an expert of
some sort provides a set of information or ideas to interact with the
initial idea. After that presentation, the two lead a discussion with
the audience that hopefully moves forward the idea for everyone

Last weekend the presenting artist was Matthew Barney, who spoke about
his current project which is called "Ancient Evenings"

For me, Barney's work is all about endurance, which I am interested in.

The logical endpoint, or point of conflict within endurance, is of
course death. So he invited two respondents for the Saturday session,
a father and a son

The son is Gabe Bartalos, who does special effects in Hollywood and
did all of the visual effects, makeup etc for Cremaster etc

The father is Michael Bartalos, who is a doctor at Columbia, and leads
a yearly seminar about death.

They both spoke about their own relationship with death, the
considerations they both have. For the son, it was largely about his
own childhood fascination with horror movies, and the way in which
death was abstract, but as an adult, he has a much different
relationship with death, which colors his work.

For the father, he spoke about how different belief systems, death is
a threat or a weight that's used to control people, and how we
shouldn't worry about it so much

I've never really been that concerned with death; I feel very
fortunate that I'm in love, have been a lot of places, have meet
incredible people and made things I'm proud of. I don't think I'd have
regrets or unfinished business if I met my end now

In terms of my remarks about death affecting me, and how that's
changed, I think it has more to do with not being so worried about
fair or unfair. I had a friend die here in New York last summer who
has a baby girl and so much left to do on earth but it didn't work out
that way

If I had to watch that happen at age 20 I probably would've lost it,
done something dramatic or ridiculous to express how unfair I thought
it was.

made me revisit death a lot in my head, and in my conversations with

consider it, but I don't think it really illuminated any new

Matthew Barney did this big performance thing which was supposed to
last 15 minutes but was closer to an hour and involved a live bull,
contortionists, a cyber-punk stage set and a man with a tiny dog for a
head in this really involved resurrection ritual. It seemed to me that
the narrative involved an attempt to corrall the bull into having sex
with this weird car-sculpture thing in order to revive a fallen maiden

ethanswan: I don't know about that show but he was one of the people
who presented at propositions. He talked about his maps of the 21st
century project/book. He was charming.

works by Damien Hirst and Michael Joo at Haunch of Venison and she was
explaining to me an idea of Derrida's about how the animal gaze is the
most "Othering" gaze because it is so completely alien that it
requires the individual to acknowledge him or herself. I like that
idea a lot, I like that the bull won't be complicit in the
resurrection. Animals can be helpful in that way.

ethanswan: Okay. For dinner I ate steamed kale, "unchicken" which I
believe is a grain-based protein, avocado salad with tomatoes and
onions, and beets. There is a grocery store by our house called Earth
Matters which has a little deli and they have 3-4 different sizes of
plastic containers and you can take as much as you can fit. I get the
"small bowl" size which is eight dollars. It is enough for a meal.
Tonight I actually brought back a used plastic container from the last
time I went and they were stoked that I was reusing it. It was a good
night to ask that question because I ate healthy and I did something
positive.

Heather and I were laughing while I ate because as a kid I wouldn't
have eaten a single one of those things, I didn't even like tomatoes.
And more importantly than that, as a kid I wouldn't have eaten
anything that touched, like if my potatoes mixed in with the
applesauce they were both tainted. But today I mix it all up and like
it better that way.

Okay 2, I do like John Maus but I don't have any of his records. Avi
and Peter's old band played with him in Austin a few years ago and Avi
made me come over and hear the record after they got home and I liked
it a lot but worried that there was a secret about it that I didn't
figure out. I like believing it's sincere but a lot of people close to
John say that it's actually really complicated and ironic, which is
troubling for me.

I think the songs are really good though. At a distance I like it a lot.

Okaaaaay so 'GREETINGS' the 13-song debut long-playing cassette by FORMER BULLIES is now completely sold out! Fear not though as the excellent SUFFERING JUKEBOX have cherry-picked 3 of its ill-est jams for their second 7" (hot on the heels of one by MAZES). AND but furthermore FORMER BULLIES are back with the perfectly-titled 'SEASONED' comprising the 10 best songs written* and recorded in an Edgeley cellar probably ever*. I don't imagine this one will hang around for long either so you'd better order it here. The cover is again beautifully screen-printed by Lucy Jones.

Also before summer's out there Former Bullies will have another slab of vinyl out in the form of a split 7" 45 rpm with WAITERS. And on top of full time jobs and being in other gnarly bands. Who said slackers?

Brief Interviews With Hideous Men was first published in 1999 and consists of 23 pieces of short fiction including the 'Examples of the Porousness of Certain Borders' series and the titular 'interviews'. As a collection it presents a deep and heavy meditation on what it is to be a human in contemporary society. It is one of the boldest and most radical books we've ever read. The experiments in form (which are wild and various) always serve the story and not the writer's ego and the 'interview' format totally showcases the deftness and versatility of his voice. The 'interviews' offer unflinching portraits of the variously flawed men of the title with the detail and precision of a sociological study and the emotional impact of a Lukas Moodysson film.
