One is the long overdue 5th Beat Unhappening mix which we've named 'LOVE MEANS GOOD NEWS FOR YOU' and which runs to some 65 minutes. As usual it can be downloaded for free from the sidebar or else by clicking here email us for track-list or if you would like us to send you a cd of it.

The other is a sampler cd with one song each from Former Bullies, Irma Vep, Waiters and Nathaniel that we've made for Alice White's new zine. When they're gone we'll put it up for download here.

THREE NEW POSTERS!

as the poster (below) implies we will be playing records every monday upstairs in Trof, Fallowfield. Last week, as well as plenty to feast your ears on they were also serving up free food from their new menu. WOW! What'll happen this week? 

If you read this poster  you will see that we are playing records the next night, Tuesday too. This time at the DEAF INSTITUTE with the amazing NITE JEWEL; probably the only band in the world that could have records out on paw tracks and Italians Do It Better. Occupying some weird nether world between your worst nightmares and your sweetest dreams, conjuring the ghosts of disco past and future. When Ariel Pink said that his aim for the Haunted Graffiti project was to make the saddest, most nostalgia laden music of all time, if he'd also wanted to make people dance to it and was, in fact a woman rather than dressing like one he'd sound like NITE JEWEL. Seriously recommend your attendance.

Then in a couple weeks, just a few days before the SIC ALPS show, our bros Hyacinth Girl managed to succeed where we failed and hook up a show for DIE! DIE! DIE! who are from DUNEDIN  and one of the most exciting bands around.

A NEW POSTER and an amazing deal

Lucy Jones made this poster* for BEAT UNHAPPENING which returns, in earnest, in September.'Twill be heaps better than before, no let-downs, original event-specific artist projections, zine and record distros, live performances and Beat Unhappening DJ's. Round one takes place September 15th and, so far, is set to feature an exclusive (outside of London) performance from Tune-Yards of Portland, Oregon whose beautiful record 'bird-brains', which first dropped on marriage is about to get a more full-on worldwide type release courtesy of 4AD and a set from Irma Vep. Oh yeah and for one week from today you can book your place for just £1 (ONE  GBP). This is because WE really want YOU to come.

POSTER, NEWS, EPHEMERA...

David Bailey made this poster for next weeks TREMBLING BELLS and RAY RUMOURS & the NO-EYED DEERS! As it states this takes place on THURSDAY 16th APRIL at THE DEAF INSTITUTE. Tickets can be bought HERE. Both have excellent new records out which you can buy or download or ignore. We urge you strongly to buy them though and they both have beautiful watercolour paintings on their covers. The Ray Rumours one is painted by Francois and contains a booklet with more inside. Don't know who painted the Trembling Bells one but it's hang-on-your-wall-worthy.

TREMBLING BELLS are an avant-supergroup led by Alex Neilson (who has played the drums with JANDEK, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Six Organs of Admittance, Josephine Foster, Alasdair Roberts etc etc) and featuring members of Pendulums, Lucky Luke and Motor Ghost. Their debut LP 'CARBETH' is released by Honest Jons which is maybe a bigger vouch than we can offer. Full on medieval punk/folk.

RAY RUMOURS & THE NO-EYED DEERS is a long running project of Ros from Electrelane and now of Trash Kit. You can buy her records here.

SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER CITY tickets are on sale HERE and you should buy one sooner than later on account of it always sells out and we do not want you to miss it. Again we are fortunate enough to be hosted by SALFORD RESTORATION OFFICE who are way too busy to clean out their office and have new murals painted and work a bar for the day and yet that is exactly what they will do because they care and hopefully they know we care and that we intend to make it worth more than their while. All of the bands playing are very special to us, some are knew in our lives: LEXIE MOUNTAIN BOYS, PRO TEEN SHEIKHS. Some we've loved forever: FORMER BULLIES(who are rocking new members and have basically invented a new genre), SIR YES SIR. And one that falls venn-like into both categories (you'll see ) FIRST TIME FLYER.

Also Ariel Pink brings his HAUNTED GRAFFITI back to Manchester for the first time since '06 to play FUTURESONIC and we are going to play records there. There is a link to tickets on the top right (or NE) of this page. There is also a Philip Glass concert as part of futuresonic. Among other minimalist righteousness P.G scored 'KOYAANISQATSI', a very important and beautiful film we recomend fully.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

We've listened at least 6 times to this David Foster Wallace reading from the Lannan archive. It's half an hour and consists of (what seem to be) fragments from the unfinished and unpublished novel 'THE PALE KING' and 'INCARNATIONS OF BURNED CHILDREN' from 'Oblivion'.

Also been falling asleep (literally and not in a bad way) to the NEW YORKER FICTION podcasts, which are basically a radical a veritable who's who then and now of short literary fiction.

WE ARE YOUNG AND WE ARE TRYING is now available to buy, did we mention that it is AMAZING and that we are proud beyond proud to have our contributions housed in such a fine place.

is the name of the first 'official' BEAT UNHAPPENING* mix.

It contains 18 songs and runs to 57 minutes.

There are threads and themes galore and but no overarching concept beyond 'we love this music and we would like you to hear it'.

WHAT DO GOOD THINGS COME IN...

if bad things come in threes? Taking this week as an example we will try and solve this mystery.

TONIGHT: Chris Corsano  returns to Greater Manchester for the first time in what seems like a long time to play at Islington Mill. This is something we've tried to hook up a few times over the years and we are glad that GOLDEN LAB have. Promises much, it's always a great show (1). Another great show, in our humble opinion, is 'HEROES' which returns to our screens tonight with chapter 4 or 'fugitives'. S'exciting yes, but they'll repeat it muchos so you should still go to see CC tonight. (2)

TOMORROW: Champions League returns (or begins for real, or gets exciting--depending on your viewpoint)(3) and MAD MEN (4) is on too.

WEDNESDAY: more CL(4.5) and also we take on 'START RUNNING' at SAND BAR. We are 'screening' a rare and special film entitled 'the JOKE' by James O. Incandenza. This is a silent and b+w movie(5) which will benefit from a live and improvised score from J.COLLIN(6) (thewholevoyald.blogspot.com), the boats(7) and more(8).

THURSDAY: BEAT UNHAPPENING is happening at the DEAF INSTITUTE from 8pm. Legendary Punk VIC GODARD brings his SUBWAY SECT for a rare and special performance(9). Sweet records played (10) and projections shown (11). FREE MIX CD's (12) and more.

FRIDAY: probably something good somewhere(12.5).

SATURDAY: Kaffequeria Cruise ship/cabaret-type party at Islington Mill (13.5)

Based on the 'facts' presented above, we conclude that good things  sometimes come in  thirteen and a halves but that more research is necessary to get anywhere near a real breakthrough. Also, the answer, despite the idiom, is not 'small packages'. We do not believe the 'size' of a 'package' has any bearing on the quality or value within said package. We are non-size-discriminative. 

We are leaning towards thinking that the answer is probably quite a lot closer to 3 than we'd previously imagined on account of the fact that 'good things' and 'bad things' are, while subjective, still pretty evenly balanced for most people

Our new monthly night at the Deaf Institute. This means we play records and invite people to do things once a month on the last Thursday of the month. This is a really bad scan of a really nice poster. Sorry Lucy.
