SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER CITY, SONNY SMITH 100 RECORDS, MUSEUMS PRESS,
Sunday sees the return of SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER CITY , as part of which we've invited 7 of our favourite bands to come and play at The King's Arms. The Sounds From The Other City poster you see at the top of the page was designed by Dave Bailey and Lucy Jones of Mount Pleasant who both have work on show in the amazing MUSEUMS PRESS group show at Islington Mill (1st floor) alongside all of the great people who's names you can see on the poster above which includes, you'll notice, Jess Higgins and Matthew Walkerdine the people responsible for MUSEUMS PRESS and also the SONNY SMITH 100 RECORDS poster displayed on this page.
SONNY SMITH 100 records and the MUSEUMS PRESS exhibition are both open for viewing for the duration of SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER CITY and are both essential viewing experiences. Both are also open for sneak previews tomorrow so after you've visited Salford Zine Fair check them out and be an expert ready for Sunday when everybody will be asking 'what's that?'
Sonny Smith 100 RECORDS in an exhibition which takes, as it's jump-off, 100 records Sonny and his friends made for a whole host of imaginary bands- the artist and song names of which were presented to a list of visual artists who were asked to realise the cover artwork of the imaginary songs while Sonny went about recording the songs. At the exhibition you can look at the record covers (made by some of our very favourite artists like Chris Johanson, Mingering Mike, Johanna Jackson, John 'OH SEES' Dwyer etc etc) and select a song from the Jukebox. Exciting right?
Sonny Smith's real band SONNY & THE SUNSETS will also be performing for us and you all at The Kings Arms as part of Sounds From The Other City alongside GIRLS NAMES, VERONICA FALLS, ANIMALS & MEN, GOLDEN GRRRLS, IRMA VEP and FEEL RIGHT

'MUSEUMS' launches
next Monday 22nd MARCH at BEAT UNHAPPENING at TROF in Fallowfield. We are so excited about this 'product' and cannot wait for you all to experience it. As detailed in the poster below, We will also be screening 'BEAUTIFUL LOSERS', and selling cakes to raise money for street children in Zimbabwe. David Bailey will also be presenting selected items from his shop 'GOOD GRIEF!'
a brand new 32-page comic from Dave Bailey;
3 screen-printed posters by Tim Lahan;
And a compilation tape we made of exclusive jams from our favourite bands on the planet: Assassins 88, Beachniks, Dunes, Former Bullies, Girls Names, Golden Grrls, Irma Vep, La La Vasquez, Mazes, Nisennenmondai, Picastro, Piece War, Reading Rainbow, Rollin Hunt, Sad Horse, Sic Alps, Silk Flowers, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Veronica Falls, Waiters and Yellow Fever.
Click on the poster to enlarge and read the small-print.
- BEAUTIFUL LOSERS was made by Aaron Rose of the Alleged Gallery/Press and details the lives, working methods and ideology of some of our favourite artists like e.g. Chris Johanson, Jo Jackson, Mike Mills, Harmony Korine, Ed Templeton, Barry McGee and Margaret Kilgallen. It documents how, collectively and individually, these outsiders, skaters and misfits came to art and how art came to them and how it is in fact inseparable from their lives. It is truly inspiring for any Do-It-Yourself-type people and we are excited to present Manchester's first public screening.
- MUSEUMS is the long-awaited and painstakingly,lovingly assembled follow-up to 'We Are Young And We are Trying'. It consists of:
a brand new 32-page comic from Dave Bailey;
3 screen-printed posters by Tim Lahan;
And a compilation tape we made of exclusive jams from our favourite bands on the planet: Assassins 88, Beachniks, Dunes, Former Bullies, Girls Names, Golden Grrls, Irma Vep, La La Vasquez, Mazes, Nisennenmondai, Picastro, Piece War, Reading Rainbow, Rollin Hunt, Sad Horse, Sic Alps, Silk Flowers, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Veronica Falls, Waiters and Yellow Fever.
- Good Grief! is the best shop in Manchester- even better than that weird new place on High Street with the caged bird and vintage guitars and dirt bikes. Proprietor Dave Bailey will be bringing the choicest cuts from his collection to try and persuade you to buy with his new sales pitch.

Here are a few things to help

with the recent passing of JD Salinger:
firstly you can read all of his stories (even those which are uncollected) HERE (thanks to Jess Higgins for the tip-off) and tributes and ruminations on the great man and his legacy from AM HOMES and DAVE EGGERS.
secondly you can get excited about this poster and the amazing show that it was made to publicise. Thanks to Lucy Jones for this ray of light:

Thirdly there is this video, which gives rise to smiles for about a million reasons:
Fourthly is the news that MUSEUMS number one is almost ready and is looking absolutely beautiful. Basically it consists of a giant (11 1/2" x 11 1/2 ") art book, 3 screen-printed posters, an exclusive new 30+ page comic by David Bailey and a compilation tape that we made with some of our favourite bands in the whole world---- NISENNENMONDAI, LA LA VASQUEZ, PIECE WAR, GIRLS NAMES, SAD HORSE, TY SEGALL, VERONICA FALLS, YELLOW FEVER, FORMER BULLIES, IRMA VEP, SIC ALPS, ROLLIN HUNT, ASSASSINS 88, BEACHNIKS, GOLDEN GRRLS, READING RAINBOW, TIGHTSUCKS, WAITERS, PICASTRO and SILK FLOWERS. It is a serious and fun document detailing the music we care about. It will be C.O.A.T -005. We've been working on it for so long and we cannot wait to share it with the world. We are honoured and privileged to be able to make this and for it to accompany such a sweet and radical publication. Pre-sale and Launch Party/Exhibition details forthcoming.
C.O.A.T-006 will be the new NEIL BURRELL album 'YOU HAVE REACHED...OUTER SPACE' which offers a heavier and more twisted psychedelia than anything else around. Much more forthcoming, wish we could disclose it all now but that's enough for one day.
To play us out Tom Settle at Manchester Zap at islington mill- Thanks to Barry Dean for capturing this rare and special performance of a deep and heavy improvisation that would perfectly serve as a requiem for JD:
