BIRTHDAY TAPES MMXII explanatory notes
At the beginning of the MMXIIth Year of our Lord we started a new collaborative with our sweet-hearted friends GIANT HELL.
We called it BIRTHDAY TAPES, as it was to be in concert with the cosmos and zodiac-affiliated and but also because we wanted each object to feel like a gift, wrapped as they are specially commissioned ark work.
Essentially a 'singles' club with one split release per zodiacal month.
So in MMXII there will be contributions from 24 different bands /recording artists and 12 visual artists/ image makers/ illustrators.
You can listen to the 7 so far below.
The series can be subscribed to HERE or digitally HERE.
Alternatively individual releases can be purchased HERE or digitally HERE
There a still a few full subscriptions remaining, which, in addition to all 12 tapes, also include a hand-mae wooden box to keep them all in courtesy of WINEBOX PRESS as well as some other surprises and printed matter.
If you have any questions please direct them to:

Help Night School Records to Help Japan
Night School Records have released two of our favourite records so far this year (Beautifully screen-printed and hand-stamped 7"s by Golden Grrrls and Terror Bird) and are readying a tape compilation called 'APPEAL', the artwork of which is above. One Hundred Per Cent of the funds generated by the sale of the tape will go directly to helping those affected by the recent humanitarian disaster in Japan. We are honoured and delighted to contribute to this worthy and worthwhile project (via donating songs from WAITERS, IRMA VEP and FORMER BULLIES) and urge you to buy it immediately from HERE . Here is the full and fully amazing tracklist:
If you still want to do more to help those affected in Japan, all of the songs on WAITERS bandcamp are now available on a 'pay-what-you-like' basis (including the 15-minutes recorded for and released at the Bijin Record Festival in Tokyo this January) and, again all of the proceeds will go directly to Japan.
Furthermore, BIG LOVE (our favourite record shop in the world), has organised an exhibition and made a charity zine to raise money too! you can buy it, along with special totes, keyrings, tapes and records HERE. Here's a couple of photos of the exhibition:
Remember, A Generous World Demands Generous Living.

COLOMBO is DOWN
A Do It Youself Thing from comfortableonatightrope on Vimeo.
And but maybe not as down as Irma Vep , who while a hiatus from performing live, have just released two legitimately CLASSIC albums.
CALENDER SNAKES/ A SHIT JIGSAW (GIANT HELL )
is a collection of 12 songs that were not recorded for any other album and over its 40 minutes it runs the gamut from plaintive and sparsely arranged nocturnes to full-on full-band workouts as well as the usual outsider howl. The only constants are the clarity, sincerity and intensity of the playing. It's like This Heat, Palace, Nisennenmondai, Cat Power, Jandek or whoever else used to be your favourite until you heard this. Seriously this is for YOU. You NEED this album. includes a cover of Rollin Hunt's 'The Husband'. The cover art displayed above is one of 100 multi-layered silk-screen prints by Lucy Jones.
GOODBYE 33, HELLO PLASTIC FURNITURE (Icecapades )
Was recorded with the assistance, equipment and expertise of Karl Sveinnson and contains the heaviest and most rocking Irma Vep songs we've had the good fortune to hear. Multi-tracked guitars (one locked in hypnotic grooves, one searing) and propulsive drums, chants and incantations. Another total mindblower.
Cover art by Miriam Avery. Ltd to 50 copies. buy it here.
Also we're down to the last few copies of the first run of 'Dylan's Birthday Present' (on blood red cassettes, cover silkscreened by Lucy Jones emblazoned with Gold Letraset-brand transfers with Lyric Sheet). If you didn't get one yet go here.
